FishLore Blog Owners - Once you get an email from me you should be ready to sign into your blog. I’ve also added FTP access so that you can easily make changes to your blog. If you’re not familar with FTP (File Transfer Protocol) it’s the way to transfer files from your computer to a networked computer. In this case you’ll be transferring files from your computer to your blog’s folders.
How To FTP:
There are many free third party programs that you can use if you want to Google them, but you can also use Windows Explorer. Right-click on the start button on your computer and then select ‘Explore’. If you don’t see an address bar (like the one in your internet browser) you can unhide it by right-clicking in the menu area of Windows Explorer and select ‘Address Bar’. Once you see the address bar, type in ftp:// and then your blog’s address. Once you type in the FTP address and press enter, you should get an ‘FTP Folder Error’ message. Click ‘Ok’. Now, right click on the right side of windows explorer in the white area, and select ‘Login As’. Enter the username and password provided to you by me for your FTP access. When logging in to your FTP account, you may want to save your username and password so you don’t have to retype it everytime you want to FTP files.
Why FTP?
While you can add photos and edit files via your dashboard, you may want to transfer these files to your computer, work on them and then re-upload them instead of editing them through the dashboard. If you have several images you want to upload, use FTP to transfer them to a folder on your blog and then you can simply link to them from any post if you know the html on how to link images.
Another option is to download a plugin called “organizer” that lets you organize and upload files via the wordpress dashboard. Once the file is uploaded you can rename them, get the linking info and even resize photos. Here is the download link:
http://imthi.com/wp-content/uploads/organizer.zip. Once you download the zip file, unzip it using winzip (free tool) and then upload the unzipped folder to your wp-content/plugins directory. Then go into your dashboard/plugins menu and “activate” the plugin. A new menu item will be created called “Organizer”. Click that link, upload your images/video and you are good to go.
This may not be for everybody though, and if you don’t feel comfortable using FTP or this plugin, just use the dashboard interface (under ‘Presentation’) and you should be fine. The Presentation menu item will take you to the various files that are used to run your blog. You can edit these to your heart’s content, but please make sure you know what your doing when making changes. I’d recommend copying and pasting the document into a file on your computer before making any changes. That way if you screw something up you can always revert back to your original saved version.
